Classroom Document
Reflection
For my document collection, I collected a Scholastic News magazine. It is basically a mini magazine/newspaper with current event articles that are kid-friendly. Also, there are questions for different articles and on the back that can be used as mini assessments. There is always a ‘Debate of the Week’ in it to encourage classroom discussion and debate. There is a ‘Sticky Situation’ that encourages problem-solving skills. In the issue I collected, there is a book review that can encourage reading new books. The mini magazine does not just use stories from the US, but also news from around the world, so it can very easily be used in social studies lessons. Also, in every issue there are new vocabulary words to teach students. Because it is a different print source other than a book, it can be used to teach print awareness as well.
I have always like Scholastic News, but now as a future teacher, I can truly appreciate it. There is so much good information in each issue, and it keeps students up to date on the current events around the world. I think this is an incredible thing to teach because more often than not, students, especially in elementary school, do not have the slightest clue as to what is going on in the world around them. The fact that it can be used for literacy and social studies is fantastic because so many teachers say they do not have time to teach social studies, but if they can get Scholastic News to teach reading and comprehension, then they can also use it to teach social studies. I thing Scholastic News is an incredible resource to have, and I hope to be able to use it in my future classroom.
